Principle of Fiber Optic Sensor Displacement Testing

Fiber optic displacement sensors measure the movement of a target by detecting changes in light intensity or phase reflected from the target, converting these optical signals into electrical signals proportional to displacement.Basic Working PrincipleFiber optic displacement sensors operate by transmitting light through an optical fiber toward a target and detecting the reflected or transmitted light. The intensity of the received light varies with the distance between the fiber probe and the target, allowing precise measurement of displacement, vibration, or surface conditions (MTI) . In extrinsic sensors, a bundle of transmitting fibers directs light to the target, while a bundle of receiving fibers collects the reflected light, which is then converted into an electrical signal by a photodetector. The signal intensity increases as the target moves closer or further within the sensitive range, enabling displacement calculation .Intensity-Modulated Fiber Optic SensorsOne common approach is intensity modulation, where the displacement is inferred from changes in light intensity received by the sensor. Multimode fibers are often used due to their large core diameter and high numerical aperture, which improve light collection efficiency and sensitivity . The sensor output is typically a voltage proportional to the reflected light intensity, which can be calibrated to provide accurate displacement measurements. The front slope of the sensor's response curve represents the highly sensitive range where small movements produce significant voltage changes .Interferometric Fiber Optic SensorsFor higher precision, interferometric techniques such as Michelson or Fabry–Perot configurations are used. These sensors measure displacement by detecting phase differences between reference and measurement light. Light from a laser source is modulated and split into reference and sensing paths; interference occurs when the reflected light recombines, producing a signal whose phase shift corresponds to the target displacement. This method can achieve nanometer-scale resolution and is suitable for microprobe applications .ApplicationsFiber optic displacement sensors are widely used in industrial, medical, and structural monitoring applications. They are non-contact, immune to electromagnetic interference, and capable of high-frequency measurements. Examples include surface profiling, vibration analysis, micro-assembly, and geotechnical displacement monitoring using distributed Brillouin sensing for large structures .SummaryIn essence, fiber optic displacement testing relies on optical detection of target movement, either through intensity changes or interferometric phase shifts. The optical signal is converted to an electrical output, which is calibrated to quantify displacement accurately. The choice of sensor type—intensity-modulated or interferometric—depends on the required sensitivity, range, and application environment.
